Department of English Philology
The Department of English Philology is a modern educational institution offering innovative approaches to teaching English and foreign literature. Repositioning existing educational programs to meet the needs of the market and stakeholders, ensuring compatibility with the educational programs of top European universities, and creating a portfolio of unique educational programs to meet the needs of the community.
Modernization and pragmatization of the content of education as one of the priority directions of the Development Strategy of Mariupol State University for 2021–2025. This involves the development of a) individual educational trajectories for higher education seekers, b) a student-centered approach to learning and teaching to meet the needs of the market for highly qualified specialists in English philology. These
specialists should combine high professional competence with general culture and the ability to implement modern linguistic research and new methods of teaching/learning foreign languages in educational institutions of various levels – from institutions of general secondary education (GSUI) (primary school, gymnasium, lyceum), vocational and technical education institutions (VTEI) to institutions of higher education (HEI).
Creation of a center for meeting the expectations of intellectual, emotional, and personal safety of participants in the educational process. This involves creating an environment of psychological comfort, an atmosphere of trust, sensuality, and revival with new values, a new philosophy, and a new brand.
The department provides teaching in 65 fundamental philological and professionally-oriented disciplines. Electronic educational complexes and courses (ENCs) have been developed on the Educational Portal of MSU (LMS Moodle), along with manuals bearing MESU and MSU labels, monographs, and teaching methods. Pedagogical cases have been developed for all types of practices.
The Department of English Philology is proud of its graduates. Over the years, it has trained more than 600 specialists who are working successfully, demonstrating a high level of professionalism, in Ukraine, Canada, the USA, Italy, Greece, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Cyprus. Graduates of the department include highly qualified teachers and lecturers, translators, employees of diplomatic missions, civil servants, company managers, and journalists. Every year, after the end of the state exams, the best graduates receive recommendations for continuing their studies at the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education to obtain the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy and/or appointment to the position of assistant professor.
The teachers of the department participate in the certification of scientific personnel as an official opponent (O.G. Pavlenko, N.A. Horodnyuk, T.S. Rozumna, O.P. Bodyk), are members of specialized scientific councils (O.G. Pavlenko, N.A. Horodnyuk), experts of the National Agency for Quality Assurance of Higher Education (O.G. Pavlenko, O.P. Bodyk), leaders of students who won prizes at the I or II stages of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad (All-Ukrainian Contest of Student Scientific Works) (T.S. Rozumna, Yu.S. Zolotko), participate in the jury of the III-IV stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiads in basic academic subjects (O.P. Bodyk), and annually provide scientific support, review and participate in the All-Ukrainian competition - protection of research works of students - members of the National Center "Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine"; perform the functions of the editor-in-chief or member of the editorial board/expert (reviewer) of a scientific publication included in the list of specialized publications of Ukraine, foreign scientific publications indexed in bibliographic databases (O.G. Pavlenko, N.A. Gorodnyuk, O.P. Bodyk, Yu.S. Zolotko).
The Department of English Philology is the organizer of the annual All-Ukrainian student scientific-practical Internet conference "Language and Literature in a Multicultural Society," at which participants present their own research on current problems of general, typological, and comparative-historical linguistics, modern translation studies, linguistic-cultural and socio-cultural aspects of philology, teaching foreign language communication, and the theory and history of Ukrainian and world literature.
