The History of Mariupol University

We emerged in the same year as Ukraine's independence, absorbing Ukrainian identity and growing on the Greek roots of our homeland. Step by step, we surpassed ourselves, setting high goals and moving towards them. Thus, Mariupol College of Humanities, which trained the pedagogical personnel for the city, became the classic Mariupol State University with multi-profile training of specialists for Ukraine and the world.

Our small history is marked by great achievements. Over 30 years of active work abroad and cooperation with foreign colleagues, we popularized Ukraine and made it attractive for scientific research, educational projects, and cultural initiatives.

We wanted to turn Mariupol into a real student city. To achieve this goal, we opened more relevant specialties, expanded partnerships, modernized the material and technical base, built new educational centers, including the unique Science Museum for Donetsk region.

Everything changed with the first explosion that marked the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. In a matter of days, we lost our native walls and everything we had achieved through hard work. But the worst news was about the losses among teachers and students whose lives were ruthlessly cut off by the war. The war left us only with our desire to restore our activities, keeping the educational and scientific front of Ukraine unbreakable. That is how we became an unbreakable University of an unconquered country.

We were forced to leave Mariupol and move to a safer city. Thus, Kyiv appeared on the pages of our biography. Then we made a promise to ourselves to preserve our identity, strengthening it with a new brand, and proudly carry the name of our native hero city, becoming ambassadors of Mariupol in Ukraine and the world.

A new era of the University began with heavy losses, but our spirit is unbreakable. We confidently look to the future, work hard for the benefit of our homeland, and successfully implement our development strategy. Our aim is to use all the international experience we have gained so that young people receive the best education in Ukraine.

Wherever we are, Mariupol remains in our hearts and minds. Each of us dreams of returning to our native city that is free and Ukrainian. We will restore it and breathe new life into it with new values, ideals, and perspectives. Mariupol will become a progressive European city, and Mariupol University will be its leader in the field of higher education.
