‘Week of the Italian Language in the World’ held at MSU
For more than 20 years, the family of Italists from Mariupol State University has been participating in events within the framework of the Week of the Italian Language in the World. 2024 was no exception either.
The initiative on the territory of the unconquered country is carried out under the patronage of the Embassy of the Italian Republic in Ukraine and the Italian Institute of Culture in Kyiv. This year's theme was «The Italian Language and the Book: The World Between the Lines».
For the MSU community, the week began with a meeting where the Italian contemporary writer Patricia Bianco talked about her professional path and shared her memories of Mariupol, which she had the opportunity to visit twice.
On Wednesday, the students met with an employee of the Embassy of Italy in Ukraine, the head of the translation bureau and a graduate of Mariupol University Valery Brishten. Future specialists learned about the peculiarities of cooperation between translators and customers, about the types of documents and texts that are most often ordered. Later the educators of the Department of Romano-Germanic Philology, Hanna Trifonova and Taisia Poklad conducted a master class for students on the translation of artistic and journalistic texts based on the results of cooperation with the Kharkiv publishing house «Folio».
In addition to university events, MSU Italist students were involved in a professional development course and meetings with an Italian writer and Ukrainian-Italian translators. During the symposium at the University of Leiden (Netherlands), associate professor Hanna Trifonova delivered a speech «From book to film: themes and heroes of the last decade.»
Among other things, within the framework of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, the Ambassador of Italy to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, donated books by Italian authors in Ukrainian translation to the fund of the scientific library of the University of Mariupol.
