Department of Greek Philology
The Department of Greek Philology plays an important role in forming the personnel base for the further development of cooperation between Ukraine, Greece, Cyprus, and centers of the Greek diaspora in countries worldwide.
The teachers of the Department of Greek Philology are proficient in two or three foreign languages, enabling the use of comparative analysis when teaching Modern Greek and writing coursework and qualification papers. Additionally, all department teachers are required to undergo internships in higher education institutions in Greece and Cyprus and participate in international scientific conferences. The teaching staff ensures the operation of the Examination Center for International Certification of Knowledge of the Modern Greek Language of the Ministry of Education and Religion of the Hellenic Republic at MSU. Mariupol State University is the first higher education institution in Ukraine to establish, in 2006, an accredited center with the right to conduct qualifying exams for obtaining an international certificate in modern Greek and to prepare for them.
The Department of Greek Philology began its work in 1996, underwent a challenging path of formation and development, won a reputation as the best center for the training of Hellenistic philologists in Ukraine, and currently trains specialists with bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
First (bachelor’s): "Modern Greek Language and literature, English Language, Translation."
Second (master’s): "Translation and Intercultural Communication (Modern Greek, English)."
The content of educational programs is formed taking into account the wishes and recommendations of stakeholders actively involved in teaching academic disciplines. The educational activity of the department is based on the principles of a student-centered approach. Winners of the department aim for comprehensive realization of their intellectual and creative abilities. In their scientific and pedagogical activities, teachers present a modern perspective on the study of the language and literature of Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek-speaking community of Nadazov. Special attention is paid to the comparative study of Modern Greek and Ukrainian languages and the theory and practice of translation from a foreign language.
Leading specialists in the field of Modern Greek-Ukrainian translation, representatives of state administration in the field of education, and public organizations are involved in teaching at the department. To encourage and support student activity, gain experience in independent research work, and develop skills to
perform coursework, the student scientific society "Actual Issues of Modern Greek Philology and Translation," headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Yu. B. Labetska, is successfully functioning at the department. Practical training will help improve students’ practical skills in educational, industrial, and pre-diploma practice.
The Department of Greek Philology is proud of its graduates. Over the years, it has trained more than 300 specialists who successfully work in Ukraine, Greece, the USA, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Cyprus, demonstrating a high level of professionalism.
